'Con Artist,' 'Sore Loser,' 'Saudi’s Bitch': How Trump's Own Cabinet Picks Have Described Their New Boss
You don’t need liberals to tell you how bad Trump is – here’s what 9 members of his own administration-in-waiting have said, from Rubio to Musk to RFK Jr. and more.
Abraham Lincoln famously wanted a “team of rivals” around his Cabinet table. Donald Trump is going a step further: Come Jan. 20, 2025, he will have a team of people who used to (still?) hate his guts; who used to mock him publicly; who used to say he was unfit for office.
Today, they have rolled over for Trump; rolled over for power and access. Yet the internet never forgets. So you don’t need to listen to liberals or leftists about how bad or unqualified or extreme Trump is, and you don’t have to pretend that any and all criticism of the president-elect is the product of ‘TDS’ or ‘Trump derangement syndrome.’
Below, you can read what nine of his own top government picks have said about him, from Tulsi Gabbard to Elon Musk to Elise Stefanik and more. Their words, not mine.
1. JD Vance, Vice President
“I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler,” wrote Vance in a text message to a former college roommate in February 2016. In a (now-deleted) tweet later that year, just a month before the 2016 election, Vance said: “Trump makes people I care about afraid. Immigrants, Muslims, etc. Because of this I find him reprehensible.”
2. Marco Rubio, Secretary of State
“He is a con artist,” Rubio declaimed at a rally in 2016. “He runs on this idea he is fighting for the little guy, but he has spent his entire career sticking it to the little guy – his entire career.” The Florida senator also questioned the size of Trump’s manhood.
3. Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence
“Hey @realdonaldtrump: being Saudi Arabia’s bitch is not ‘America First,’” tweeted Gabbard in 2018. The following year, the then-congresswoman accused Trump of “inciting racism and violence in our country” and also being “corrupt” and “unfit to serve our country as president.”
4. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services
“A second Trump presidency would be bad for the country,” tweeted Kennedy in April. “President Trump had his chance. He failed.” Trump “scammed American workers,” tweeted Kennedy in May, and also “inflamed racial tensions and didn’t keep us safe… If you think a second Trump term would be any different, you are engaging in wishful thinking.”
5. Elise Stefanik, US Ambassador to the United Nations
“There is no place for what Trump said about Muslims in this country,” Stefanik remarked in December 2015, in the wake of Trump’s pledge to ban Muslims from entering the United States. “I think he has been insulting to women,” she declared, also in 2015. In 2016, she called his “grab them by the p***y” comments “inappropriate, offensive” and “just wrong.”
6. Vivek Ramaswamy, co-head of the new Department of Government Efficiency
Both in his tweets and in his books, Ramaswamy called Trump a “sore loser” and a “danger to democracy,” who did “downright abhorrent” and “egregious” things on Jan. 6, 2021.
7. Elon Musk, co-head of the new Department of Government Efficiency
Musk called for a “less divisive” presidential candidate than Trump in 2022 and also said Trump would be “too old” to be president again: “Trump would be 82 at end of term, which is too old to be chief executive of anything, let alone the United States of America.”
8. Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security
“I believe his statement was un-American,” the then-GOP congresswoman told a local radio station in South Dakota in 2015, referring to Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’ remark. “I don’t agree with it.”
9. Doug Burgum, Secretary of Interior
In July, when asked by NBC’s Chuck Todd whether he would do business with Trump, Burgum replied: “I don't think so,” adding: “I just think that it's important that you're judged by the company you keep.”
