The corruption in this administration is almost mind-numbing. Not only does it pertain to our country but multiple countries. WTF is wrong with these heads of governments who just cow down and rollover to the fascist? The bastard is nothing but a bully, who would go cry in a corner, if stood up to. People know better than to cave into ridiculous, corrupt, and illegal demands, especially coming from the most corrupt president in our history. I am praying that Democrats take the House and Senate in '26, in big numbers, so he can be impeached, convicted, and thrown the hell out of office. The man is a shit stain on our country, who needs to be removed asap.
I read all this and think the corruption and lawlessness of the administration is beyond belief. And then I take note that this all happened in one week. They do more evil in a week than most people could commit in a lifetime.
Mehdi I like what you are doing along with the rest of the progressive alternative media.
Of course, there are things that grate at me and the title of thsi column is one of them. You are not alone in referring to the USA as a democracy. I cannot think of one alternative progressive channel that does not do the same.
Why does is bother me? People who think the US is a beacon of democracy think we get what we deserve because we voted for someone. Voting does not create a representative democracy in and of itself. At 78 I can say that in past 57 years only one person ever represented me and that was Paul Wellstone. How can that be? Simple the UK and many of its former colonies use district systems. Where there are plurality takes all with in a district, riding or constituency. This system make corruption extremely easy and very common. Elections can be more easily bought by those with money.
If the USA was a representative democracy, we would get the things the fast majority of us want: a national healthcare system starting with medicare for all, paid parental leave, free education from pre-K thru graduate school, and a government that cares for the people not for the super-rich.
Finally believing this is a democracy has led to great complacency, and a misunderstanding what it will take to create real change.
A representative democracy is what we should dream for, strive for and demand. But it is NOT our reality. The only way we can make change is in the streets, in our unions, our social connections, because changing policy, changing our governmental structure, changing our economic relationships is almost impossible from the voting booth in the USA.
I cannont say this about most western nations where they at least have reprentative democracies.
