I posted a photo of Border Patrol agents pinning a man to the ground in a headlock – and the internet made up every excuse in the book to defend the assault.
Every brutality photo and video kills me a piece at a time, but I look and I share, and I fight a little harder. I think (hope) the Internet comments are just bots.
This is what the government is allowing. We saw this kind of take down and worse on immigrants and protesters in Chicago. I think ICE never shows a warrant and in Chicago picked up many citizens who were thrown in cars, brought to ICE facilities and left for many days. The people who agree with these tactics may find themselves one day having this happen to them for doing nothing. Please keep up the fight
There are some famous psychology experiments calling eyewitness testimony into question, maybe dating back to the Civil Rights era, in which people are shown images of an unarmed black guy facing a white with a knife, and vice versa, and people would disproportionately say the black had the knife in both sets. An earlier version of the hallucination you report, in other words.
What it takes is what it has always taken, having it happen to you. Suddenly, when it’s your ox being gored, well that’s another story indeed. From there at least a few can take the next step of realizing that it happens like that to others.
And it's this type of violence that will bring down the government of the United States someday soon. This kind of state sanctioned violence will eventually start an uprising as these videos will incite people to violently stand up for their freedoms. I've seen this happen in countries all around the world during my military career. In nearly every country that has undergone a violent transformation, the type of government that emerges on the other side is nothing like the one it replaced.
This is all part of the Neoliberal assault on America and the world. To convince people that what they see with their own eyes is something else. And to build a narrative that is ready made for anything that would challenge that narrative. All is well and good - they think - until it comes to them and for them and then.........it is too late for them. They have been conditioned to think something else and are primed for the picking. The minds of Americans and others around the world are under assault. This is full blown Psychological Warfare for control of the minds of Americans and others everywhere and it is being carried out worldwide. Do not think. Do not question. Do not dig into what is going on. Do not..... Just do what you are told to do and what to believe. You mind is under assault all the time.......be aware........who is doing it, why are they doing it, what is it they want,......(And with AI is will only get worse, why do you think Trump does NOT want states now to be able to regulate AI? Regulation limits the power of the assaults for control of your mind, freedom for them means they get to operate unfettered....)
When will someone confront the world leaders who give total impunity to Israel? Israel has violated the ceasefire agreement terms over 500 times and you don’t confront any government about their lack of response. They could force Israel to allow all aid that is sitting and waiting to be delivered. People are dying from the storm because Israel won’t allow in mobile homes or even the poles that would fortify the inadequate tents they have permitted? Please, please confront the world leaders as to way they don’t hold Israel accountable and use their power to get the aid into Gaza.
This is a problem in many parts of the world, but in my experience especially in the US - the decades of propaganda of violent, psychotic criminals that need Dirty Harrys of this world to be contained. Decades of films, TV, media leading the US to become one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to incarceration - the US has more prisoners than China, just think about it. The road to ICE brutality was slow but sure, and was inevitable - even Bill Clinton had proclaimed War on crime, that destroyed urban texture, among the poor, especially blacks. And Americans let it happen, with little or no protest, in great deal due to the narrative that this article talks eloquently about. I have nothing to add to it, it is powerful enough, I just don't get this: 'Well-meaning prosecutors would twist themselves into knots to explain away officers’ misconduct even when violence...'. Why should one consider these prosecutors to be well-meaning? The responsibility is collective and thus to call people that perpetuate the horror of the police state well-meaning is somehow wrong - it makes them be less responsible for what should be considered a crime against humanity.
The dehumanization of the “other” in the US has a long and deplorable history since the arrival of the lumpen, miserable escapees nobody wanted from Great Britain. Outcasts themselves from England, Scotland or Wales they arrived to plunder, murder, exterminate the inhabitants of the land they took by force. The brutality of years of European bloodshed led to the creation of a colonial state, equally bloody and cruel. The delusion is in believing that it is a democracy where respect for human life and the rule of law is sacrosanct-it isn’t and never was. Utter disgust for what is now a dystopian landscape…a darkness not even Conrad could envision and a population binging on violence, abuse, cruelty. May the heavens open up to bring light into such hearts of darkness.
What has happened to “innocent until proven guilty”, not just in court but in the court of public opinion? Why assume that because he is being arrested he is a danger, or why assume that he is in the country illegally? (Oh, and by the way, there are no “illegal” people, only people who are undocumented or in the country illegally.).
Furthermore, imagine what the scene might have been if the man being arrested was clearly a “white” man, maybe in a shirt and tie?
“A class H violent felony, punishable by up to three and a half years in prison “ puts the disturbing assault photo into a factually based legal context. Thank you Scott Hechinger for this critically important analysis of how many Americans are able to dismiss criminal violence based on their preconceived cognitive bias for trusting the judgement of uniformed authority figures.
Every day I feel more embarrassed to be an American. We look like fools on the world stage. I sincerely hope that once Democrats are in charge steps will be taken to dismantle ICE and to make changes to our laws that prevent the rise of fascism from ever occurring again.
There Will Be Consequences For Nazi Republicans and SCOTUS
Elie Mystal over at the Nation(https://bit.ly/3MXnczZ) has started an online publication which addresses a much needed candid look at this rogue conservative SCOTUS In a preview article Mystal reviews the recent Emil Bove suck up performance at Cheeto’s Pennsylvania casino rally The question is raised what a recently appointed federal judge on the 3rd Circuit would be doing at a political rally
Mystal has long been advocating for an expansion of SCOTUS after the Mitch McConnell shenanigans put two conservative Federalist recommended judges on the Court leading to a lopsided partisan judicial politic In arguing the case Mystal makes the cogent point that expansion would lead to a partisan expansion where future elected administrations would simply continue to expand based on which party was in power The appropriate response would be “that’s just fine because it would dilute the power of these SCOTUS judges”
As Thomas gets ready to take his motor home into the sky and Alito retires to his upside down flag house at the beach, Cheeto is hoping Bove will be front and center on his list to fill those vacancies All the more reason to expand this partisan money backed court
Scott, you do valuable work. But X is a white supremacist platform. *Of course* you're going to get a white supremacist backlash on there. It's like going to a Nazi/Klan/MAGA meeting and being shocked that you hear slurs.
Every brutality photo and video kills me a piece at a time, but I look and I share, and I fight a little harder. I think (hope) the Internet comments are just bots.
So grateful to Scott Hechinger for his noble, invaluable work.
I will not support any future candidate for high office that doesn't address the dismantle of ICE.
