In my opinion, we are being incredibly hypocritical if we say we are so concerned about women in other countries being oppressed when women in our own country are having our rights taken away daily. If the things happening here were happening in another country, we would send our military to fight for the peoples' freedom.
This is rich when they are going to fight for Iranian women right to wear mini skirt while the women in Gaza have no right to life or a woman in Mississippi does not have a right to family planning.
The Democrats are the most hypocritical about women's rights. I remember an extravaganza in Houston during the election with Beyoncé and candidate Harris. The point was to promote choice on birth which is a serious issue but the context seamed grotesque.
When it came to Gaza where the great majority of the victims are children and babies are dying in incubators from bombs and cutting of electricity Harris would belittle to protesters by saying things like I know you have your little issue but I AM running for president.
It's always been about the oil. Everyone should remember that. It's always been about the oil for fifty plus years. Until that commodity is no longer worth so much money, wars will continue to be over the oil and gas, no matter what any government tells us.
Avarice. A degree of greed and selfishness that is beyond the imaginations of most of us, until we watch the millionaires and billionaires at a silly wedding, or flying off for fifteen minutes of weightlessness while ignorning the hungry, the sick, the unjustly imprisoned.
Thank you for your indepth and honest reflection on the West's hypocrisy when it comes to women's rights. Most well informed people can see the double standards but western politicians and media continue to peddle lies and misdirection led by their wealthy & self interested donors.
Israel functions as a colonial project backed by the collective weight of Western powers. No longer simply a French, British, or American endeavor, it has become a shared initiative reflecting broader Western supremacist ideology. Israel receives unwavering support—armed with advanced weaponry, political impunity, and a media narrative that often shields it from scrutiny, whether it’s operations in Gaza or provocations toward Iran, even ignoring peace proposals like Trump’s without consequence.
Mainstream Western media plays a significant role in shaping this narrative. Coverage often reflects institutional biases, emphasizing Israeli security while downplaying or omitting Palestinian perspectives. Language choices like “clashes” instead of “attacks,” or “militants” versus “freedom fighters,” subtly shape perception. Israeli voices dominate airtime, sidelining the complex human realities on the ground.
But the tide is shifting. Social media and independent journalism are challenging the monopoly on truth. Platforms now allow real-time witnessing of atrocities, enabling ordinary people to ask critical questions and demand accountability. Mainstream outlets struggle to respond, making space for voices like Zeteo that prioritize historical context, marginalized perspectives, and unfiltered reporting.
Brilliant writing and well researched Ms. Fatima Bhutto!!
But how dare you write so well, when you are brown and Muslim. Shouldn't you be uneducated and oppressed.......and eagerly waiting for the west to bomb and libertate you?
As you point out 75% of the STEM graduates in Iran are women and the literacy rate for women in Iran is 85%. This is higher than the literacy rate of 79% for the entire USA Population.
In the USA women may have the right to wear a mini skirt...but they do not have the right to their own body that wears that mini skirt.
Ms. Bhutto you are also directly related to the first Woman Prime Minister to be democratically elected (another anomaly that gives the USA and the West a Matrix Glitch and short circuit!!) in a Muslim Majority Country................How? but,....but shouldn't you have been bombed first??
Indeed. This from the so called democratic nation that can’t seem to elect a female president, scant number of senators and is shrilling and cruelly opposing women’s health and autonomy within the borders of such beacon of democracy and “democratic exceptionalism”. As a third world, educated and international human who has crossed cultural and linguistic borders; I am so sick of the WW speaking for autonomy but vote for trump. US of A!
Mostly I agree, but I do want to point out that many western women who probably think of themselves as feminists do demonstrate in support of Palestinian rights. For example, Susan Sarandon.
And I'm hardly famous, but I do think of myself as a feminist, and I've definitely been regularly demonstating for Palestine since Xmas eve 2023. Although I don't see women's rights as a reason to kill anyone....
I do not agree with many of the sentiments expressed here. I just understand that the women of the world do not do well in authoritarian regimes, and the US has grown more clearly into one now. Men may not do well, but women do less well. How well women do generally effects the quality of life for children, so that is another group that is harmed.
Women and girls are slaves all around the world and that is a problem. Having a high literacy rate, and having a high rate of women in STEM does not make it okay for a woman that she does not have rights over her own body. That is true in the US as well. This is why Iran is held up as an example of what the US is turning into, as a White Christian Nationalist theocracy.
If the US were not such a patriarchy, perhaps the men leading it would not be bombing other countries who are not a direct threat to them. I could say the same of Russia too, although given that Iranian leadership supports Russian leadership and has provided them with weapons in their unprovoked war on Ukraine I am not sympathetic to the Iranian government no more than I am to the Russia.
Iranian leadership seemed to find provoking such an attack an acceptable risk for its actions, and the leadership is allied with many bad players in the world. I do not support that the US bombed Iran, or that Trump did not get the permission of Congress to do it. Iran is currently allied with Russia, and they are violating NATO sanctions on Russia. Iran, China, North Korea are all part of an alliance that is guilty of this. Iran does this accepting that it might provoke actions against its people. Trump does the same thing. That is how authoritarians operate. They do not protect their people, they go for what they think will give them the most power. These actions do not have anything to do with the well being of women in the US or Iran. The leaders of both countries do not care about the well being of any of their people, just themselves.
Why would Iran feel bound by NATO sanctions? There's that western imperialist view showing, why do you have to obey a dictate from a club you don't belong to?
Not saying that they would, since obviously they would not. While my view may be western, I am not an imperialist. I am pointing out another area in which the US and Iran are not on the same page and that yes, they are in 2 different clubs, although Trump seems to be trying to join the club Iran is in. I do not respect either leader.

If their country had something the US wanted or politics they didn't like

Didn’t she famously say, “I am speaking” when people challenged her on the genocide in Gaza! No, I won’t vote for her ever-not governor of California.
Thanks, i had forgotten the exact words. Well she’s got a lot of time to speak now.

It is not about oil or gas alone, it is about the total submission. With total submission, oil, gas or minerals will flow as our demands dictates.

Kind of like how bigots feign concern for women’s sports
Once upon a time, there were thousands of Europeans conquering the world, declaring stolen land and goods "theirs".
Nowadays, their offspring are doing the same, stealing and murdering just like their ancestors.
They founded satellite states from which they have more reach to conquer even more.
Did you really think this all was "in the name of..." something?
It has always been and will always be just for power and profit.
