Back then I joked that he could be caught on video, kicking a baby down a flight of stairs while eating a live puppy, and he still wouldn't lose support. To bring in some sociology and social psychology, think of all the people who participate with groups that abuse them, abusive relationships, group scapegoats and whipping boys. Why do they continue to participate with groups and people that abuse them. It's because the status that they derive from being part of this group is worth more to them than their wellbeing.
