This is so insightful and almost thorough. And yet can this moment really be understood without looking back to the dispossession and in many cases genocide of Native people? Hitler himself was such a fanboy of Andrew Jackson and his Trail of Tears, going so far as to say the Volga would be "our Mississippi." Doesn't this matter to the moment we're in? Isn't is the root of our racial and gendered capitalism?
Orwell writing almost 80 years ago and not having anyway to know what technology would be available, definitely got it right! Maybe not the date which was just an inversion of 1948 but all the key components of where authoritarianism was going!
The quotes from Reagan are a powerful reminder of widely held American values. I also appreciate the reminder that only 27% of us are Trump supporters.
Trump has no clue about US history. It was never white and Christian. My father’s family came over on the Mayflower. I find Trump and his ilk to be anti American as you can get. My mother’s family were here before his and they’re Cape Verdean. Cape Verdeans have been in the US since the colonial times. So have Jews and other non Christians. It sickens me to the core that these people have power when they literally have no roots in this country. None!!! They live in a fantasy world!!
So let's reduce it down...the 19th and 20th century progressive actions taken by our system of laws, ranging from the 13th to the 27th amendments represents the recognition for need to CHANGE. You can add in the Bill Of Rights. At its best, changes are the result of liberal actions taken on the part of our legislative system and our culture to repair what is wrong with our society. If you are conservative in one aspect or other, the idea of change is abhorrent to whatever it is you value. So nominally, christianity, like other religions, is trying to give simple explanations and meaning to our world. It turns out that conservatism has its need for orthodoxy. Oder, rules. It also turns out that above and beyond our intended system of laws is this other thing: Our need to accumulate wealth, currency in our case. And there is a conservative impulse and orthodoxy for the need for wealth. It's called greed. Wealth and the wealthy, owns religions, it owns societies and the people in it, it wants one thing to happen, unfettered increase in that pile of valuable stuff. TR, Taft and FDR put into laws, an intention to put limits on that greed and the abuses associated with it eg. Slavery, misogyny and racism. The poisoning of air, water and the soil. It sucks to be us.
Cheeto’s And Nazi Republican Attack On Voting Rights
Fundamental to the Nazi Republican attempt to turn our republic into an authoritarian regime is to do away with thousands if not millions of registered voters who are labeled “enemies of the people” It’s important with daily news cycle distributed information to lose sight of the Nazi’s primary goal
Make no mistake the underlying ongoing effort to subvert and suppress registered voters is THE primary action of the Nazi Republican party So we should not take our eyes off the process that the Nazis have put in place as their primary objective
Cheeto loyalists at DOJ have replaced those who worked to insure free and fair elections Agencies to oversee elections including foreign interference have been cut Of course the gerrymandering has gotten to a boiling point And we can expect more attacks going forward
But Marc Elias at Democracy Docket(can sign up for free) underscores that elections and their certification occur not at the Federal but at the state level so protections against Cheeto’s attack and usurp electoral results will only go so far So WE the People control our own destiny when it comes to preventing the republic from collapse

He who controls the present controls the past
He who controls the past controls the future

What a succinct summary of how Trump and his followers conflict with America’s founding principles. Thank you.

Excellent analysis how far America has come from its principles.
One caveat: True MAGA s a a small minority, 27%, but throughout history a MINORITY can often form a dictatorship.
