This will not end well for the people stranded in the war zone or the Trump administration. Americans are becoming more aware of what Trump has unleashed without any consultation with anyone and he will pay a price for that soon. Meanwhile, a lot of people are going to die on both sides. The State Department has traditionally arranged evac flights (and helped people get to the evac point as far as resources permit) for US citizens caught overseas in a crisis, as the article points out has been done in the past. The hollowing out of competence in favor of loyalty to Trump has a price which is being paid now and in the future.
Access is definitely the key. A colleague, a contractor working in Liberia on an American aid project, was arrested under an extortion scheme common in that country. No connections, the US embassy help line was a mobile number that was offline. I was able to go in person to the embassy, told had to make an appointment (only available once a week), given a list of lawyers, told on your own if you are a private citizen, even if an official project. That classic TV version where someone from the consulate comes to help is only for the connected. (The embassy, BTW, was quite huge for the size of the country, plenty of staff).

The war is illegal. Congress has to approve war declarations, and it has not done so.
