Thank you for a spot on piece. I lost friends who voted for Trump the first time, as politics isn't merely policy, it's values. And Trump was always just a symptom of our values. I say with great pain and no apology: We are the shithole country.

Really excellent piece; one of the difficulties of talking about voters in this environment is that there are two very different groups of people out there. There's "us", those of us reading this piece, and then there's the broad, fascist middle class in this country that applauds the cruelty, the evil, that is described in this piece. When you say, "will you let them?" the point is being directed to the wrong group of people. Those reading this essay of course will answer with a resounding no. But whatever the opposite of preaching to the choir is, that's what this essay is. You're begging an absent audience to exercise their moral authority... but of course, they won't, and they aren't the ones reading this essay anyway. The problem that so many commenters, writers, pundits, etc., don't want to address head on is that we have a fascist middle class that cheers this cruelty on, that is incredibly ignorant and poorly informed. THAT is what allows Trump to get away with his crimes, it's all being rubber stamped by this group of foolish and hateful bigots that voted for him and continue to sing his praises. Until those people wake up, we're doomed to a really ugly authoritarian future. Basket of deplorables, it turns out, was an understatement.

Great article, I just hope a Trump supporter gets to read it and still feel comfortable with themselves

Please stop giving credence to the Trump administration’s claims that we’re in a war by talking about who is or who is not responsible for war crimes. That’s exactly what they want you to do. We’re not in a war. Full stop.

Well said! Pls keep on doing what you. We will continue to do our part to end this vile and malevolent attack on our freedom and democracy but leopards don’t change their spots and the willfully ignorant will remain so. We need to remain alert to see what is real and continue to peacefully boycott the supporters of this mendacious malevolent regime as they are no different than those they support, protest daily, write/text, call our congress persons as well as those who are not and admonish them as frequently as possible. Perhaps it is time to think about national strikes that are peaceful as those

will actually hit them in their pocketbooks…where they will

actually feel it!

Just say NO!

I'm currently reading "Empire of Illusion" by Chris Hedges. We have been heading down this road as a nation for a long time. Think of the GW Bush administration lying us into war, and the war crimes they got away with. Corporations have even more control of the media and the government than they did in 2008, when Hedges wrote this book. How do we get our government back?

Repellent as the current regime is, I can't forget or forgive Biden's full-throated support for genocide. I would place them both - and, sadly, most of our country's foreign policy - on a sort of continuum of cruelty. This of course reinforces Prem's point - it's about basic human values, regardless of what club you're in. In addition to excoriating the politicians, officials, and journalists who either practice or enable this cruelty, we can look at the institutions which have normalized it for decades, among which I'd include our so-called intelligence services and our whole border-management apparatus.

Excellent article, Prem! The repubs no longer have a conscience. Instead of standing up to the administration on these activities that are inherently illegal, cruel, disgusting - they are more interested in keeping their jobs, their perks, the lobby money. As long as trump & his imbeciles are in charge, their cruelty grows everyday.

They are evil, brain-washed & sociopathic losers.

It is important that those of us who believe in what is right, fair & honest, continue to do whatever we can to fight them at every turn.

Prem the murders in the Caribbean committed by the Trump administration ARE NOT WAR CRIMES!!! THERE IS NO WAR!!! These are extrajudicial killings by a lawless government and military- an international crime. However since there no longer is fealty to international law by the U.S., Europe etc. it’s now a law of the jungle. These are crimes against humanity period full stop!!! PLEASE STOP PERPETUATING THE LIE OF A WAR AND WAR CRIMES when commenting on Venezuela etc.

Christian Nationalism: Nazi Republican Eugenics Program

The point of cruelty as Prem points out is to show dominance of the "superior race" The question to the electorate: don't you want to be part of the superior group? It's in the DNA of the Chrsitian Nationalist movement to be evil and cruel

RFK Jr’s anti vaccine policy fit very nicely with the far right’s eugenics stand because at the heart of his policy is that the strong don’t need vaccines and by prohibiting vaccines to the general population you inherently weed out the weak

The Christian Nationalist racist movement is a reinvention of eugenics in the guise of supporting white Christian values At the center of the movement is that white Christians are superior to all the rest of the world on a genetics level and therefore should rule the world Cheeto’s abusive language toward not only the “inferior immigrants” but recently he’s been going after Europeans as well depicts his sordid idea that supports the eugenics of the Christian Nationalists

But this worn out trope of superiority that rang true in Hitler’s Nazi Germany is as old as humans have occupied the planet Men aren’t created equal because men always seek to assert their dominance over others, seeking to make them better than the others In the end though, we all come from the same Maker and are deemed with certain inalienable rights The attack on these rights by the Nazi Republicans, Cheeto, and his obsequious billionaires all but doom the Christian Nationalist movement

The most recent South Park episode now airing on Paramount Plus is a hilarious parody of the lunacy of Christian Nationalism and the underpinnings that Cheeto and Just Dance Vance have with the movement
