Mehdi, between the unSupreme Court and the Orange Jesus, there is no telling what will happen with birthright citizenship or for that matter any given part of the Constitution.

Conservatives aren't originalists; they are "convenientists."

Exactly this. Trump doesn't give a third of a shit of the "proper" way to do the awful things he wants to do. So, ultimately, it doesn't matter if it takes a constitutional amendment and it doesn't matter how much precedent he's acting against.

Incidentally, if trump files such an EO, the dems should immediately file articles of impeachment for violating his oath of office.

They won't, but they should.

All of this pointing at every foreigner and every bureaucrat that is an “enemy”…or the wasteful govt spending that therefore requires indiscriminate slashing by corporate elites (Elon Musk and Vavek R) is a distraction for “the people”. To look away from the real problem…the economic ideology introduced in the 1970,s by Reagan and Thatcher…NEOLIBERALISM. It serves only corporations and the wealthy elites. By design it creates wealth inequality, low wages/labour costs and little social support/govt assistance…this and globalism has made it today’s global scourge. Rein this in and the distribution of wealth improves. No political party will change it unless you remove dark corporate money and neoliberal policy. They don’t want you to look at that. Look at the foreigners.

It's an interesting point you've made Michelle but I'm not sure the scope of the problem and the trigger to it's re-adjustment lies in US domestic politics. As you say, 'globalism' - that is where the reset will occur imho. The USA, even in it's lower socio-economic strata, enjoys fairly robust and tolerable standards of living (societal issues notwithstanding) bouyed by something that gets very little mainstream coverage - the global reserve currency is predominantly the US dollar but increasingly less so.

In recent years that is eroding (US santions actually are supercharging this decline) and I'm not an economist so I can't tell you what is the tipping point but the 'run on the banks' that's be experienced domestically in the past from economic shocks will be nothing compared to the 'run on the central bank' as the world switches off to US dollars. Money won't benefit from shifting from deposits to bonds, stocks or cash, all of them won't be worth holding domestically - unless they're from somewhere else.

Then you get your socio-economic reset albeit inhospitably, turning the tolerable into the intolerable for the vast majority of the domestic population in a society with a lot of firearms domestically and a penchant for bombs internationally. The rest of the world isn't likely to come running to the rescue. Even the 'close allies' and 'special friends' etc will drag their feet on any assistance as it will be in their interest to do so.

My point being that I'm not sure that US policy can rein in the global scourge you refer to.

Best keep an eye on global reserve currency ratios. A broke friend is a concern, a broke-ass desperate friend with a gun is a problem.

Why do liberal centrists continue to believe that clutching their pearls over the integrity of "The Law" makes any difference whatsoever to anyone in Government? In either party? If Trump wants to remove the 14th Amendment, SCOTUS will help make it happen, Congress will approve. If Biden wants to violate the United States' own human rights policies on arms shipments, he simply did. In the absence of meaningful structural change to our electoral system, ongoing discussion of Trump's "shocking" disregard for legal precedent is just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic for views.

eye opening... you got me with "Biden and human rights violation"...ouch can't turn away from that

More and more we are seeing evidence that Trump is going to renege on most, if not all, of his campaign promises. Most because of his ignorance of U.S. laws.

What is going to happen in the U.S. when the people who voted for him finally realize this?

I know folks in m y own circle who have paid social security all their lives, maxed out their 401 contributions & Roth IRAs and still cannot retire under the roof they own. Their American dream is in Vietnam. Someone enlighten mean please...

Keep going after him Medhi.!!!

Jon Stewart has been framing events like this one in terms of “rules, loopholes, and norms.” I’m sorry Medhi, but these Supreme Court precedents that you list would be categorized as norms. Checks and balances are corrupted, and all hell may break loose

One of Mehdi's shortcomings is that he is under the impression that logic and common sense apply to trump's motives. trump will undoubtedly make life miserable for thousands of birthright citizens leading to long protracted court battles - his turf.

So, on the conservatives reading of people who have "committments to other countries" would mean that all Israeli dual citizens could be stripped of their USA citizenship as well. Also that would apply to Melanie Trump, Elon Musk and their children.

Trump and his allies will double down on these kinds of policies and other uber nationalistic issues as soon as his tariff plan and other economic proposals fail to yield any positive results. If his economic policies create more distress for the common people, all these nationalistic policies will be touted with more fervor as distractions from the real issues. This is nothing new; whenever parties fail to deliver, they start trumpeting nationalistic ideals. This has been going on for ages in every country.

Does the statement, "loyalty to a foreign power" (3:30-3:33) include US persons fighting in a foreign war on behalf of a foreign power where US is not fighting a war includes dual loyalty of US Persons fighting in the IDF? If so is DJT including them too? I wonder

Who would be denied birthright citizenship? Which babies? Brown? Black? Red? Yellow? White? No more citizens ever?

What about the Russians that came here and had babies???

You mean a Slovenian, like Melania?

Well I think you know what I mean. They fly over pregnant for he intent of having their baby here. Melania didn't follow immigration rules she was bought by Trump for whatever reason. To answer your comment, yes like her. Elon's immigration status is suspect too.
