I wish these two were still in Congress. This discussion reminds me once again of the outsize power in this country of the right-wing Israeli lobby, e.g., AIPAC, which poured millions of dollars into the primaries to defeat them. Any many Democrats, as well as Republicans, take money from AIPAC, e.g., Schumer, Gillibrand and Booker. Then they vote accordingly to continue funding the genocide in Gaza. I expect the DNC and establishment Democrats will push another genocide supporting politician on us in the next presidential race. Cory Booker, an unwavering Netanyahu supporter, is already priming for the job. This issue has split the Democratic Party like almost no other. It is time the party recognizes that it cannot win while continuing its uncritical support of the Netanyahu government. Supporting genocide is a bridge too far for many voters who would otherwise support Democrats. And the establishment party is also supporting attacks on free speech on our college campuses and elsewhere and the deportations of innocents in the name of fighting “antisemitism.” I subscribe to the NYT’s and am a regular reader of the liberal Israeli paper, Haaretz. It is easier to criticize Israel’s continuing assaults on Gaza in the latter. I have had relevant and civil comments criticizing Israel’s conduct censored by the Times while observing that much harsher criticisms have been published in Haaretz. There have also been large protests in Tel Aviv with photos of Palestinian children killed in Gaza that may well have resulted in suspensions of students or worse if carried out on U.S. campuses. President Kennedy pressed for the registration of AIPAC’s predecessor to register as a foreign lobby organization. U.S. politicians who accept money from the group should have to register as foreign agents. Enough of this outsized, undemocratic influence, and enough of these immoral politicians who have taken over the Democratic Party.
I completely agree with you about the immoral and unsustainable Israeli War on Gaza and their efforts to invade the West Bank and steal more land. I have been sounding the alarm about the Israeli genocide since Oct. 2023. There is a new organization that is offering members of Congress an alternative path called A New Policy, which was founded last year by former State Dept. officials who object to our Israeli enabling policy. AIPAC should be registered as a foreign agent and the U.S. must quit giving weapons of mass destruction to Israel. We must also end the sanctions upon Syria, which is trying to be independent.
