Researcher Jacob Coxon’s warning of the existential threat posed by AI prompted a slew of others working at Anthropic, DeepMind, & OpenAI to sound the alarm bells AI critics have long been ringing.
"Evidently, he never figured out how to stop that." Describing it would be a good first step.
I'm sorry to say it, but this article is simply blatant fear-mongering. Where's the specifics? How is it going to kill us in the next decade? More nuclear power? Capriciously shut off people's water and electricity? Robot police throwing us all in jail? What? Did these people all sign NDAs?
That one guy saying he'd burn his equity to the ground for a 1% improvement in humanity's chances. I have a lighter, buddy, if you want to get started. But please, tell us why.
The rich, the poor and everyone in between all knows that climate change and resource depletion is going to kill us all. Yet we continue to dig scrape and burn our way through the planet. Why on earth would be concerned about AI killing us all when all we really want is to book a faster flight or get that Amazon delivery quicker.
This article is chef's kiss. Thank you for putting it together, such a joke of tech bros!
They acting as if AI is going to have autonomy and be the cause of Human destruction. Distracting the public that it is them who are pushing model after model without the proper guard rails, lobbying against regulations, ignoring environmental impact that's going to kill us. All these "AI went rogue" was a judgement lapse by an engineer/tester somewhere or maybe straight up marketing.
Either ways company CEO, CISO NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. Why is a COMPANY THAT CARRIED OUT hacking not shut down or the minimum audited and heavily fined? Why was noone fired over this lapse?
I live on an Island, off another Island, Thats about as remote as anyone wants,
Beautifully so. I look at the ocean. But I'm well connected to the world through my computer, and whatever that is connected to. Few Know. I dont!
So its hard for me to consume the news that AI is giong to kill me?
I'm aware of AI every time I text someone, And gratefull for the spelling lessons through that exercise, But how can this thing, I cant even imagine what it looks like, or even where it lives .
How can it kill me, and my next door neighbour, who doesnt even use a computer?
I never consider to be alone in my thoughts, there are millions of people, if not billions of people, in the same boat as me, although not neccesarily on an island.
The AI workers could unionize and they could force the companies to stop doing certain things. As Hamilton Nolan has written today, it is pretty crazy that it seems more fantastical for AI workers to unionize than it does for a few billionaire CEOs to build something that will cause human extinction. Dr. Strangelove indeed.
Why is AI even a thing? We don't need it, nor does the average person want it. For any good that it might do, are a zillion reasons why it is bad. The money-hungry, power-hungry tech bros who are doing this have absolutely no conscience or care one iota about humanity. Shut the whole thing down, pull the plugs, torch the data centers, take a sledgehammer to it. This is a 1960's sci-fi movie coming to fruition, just stop it before it gets so out of control, there's no going back. WTF is wrong with these people, when they know a catastrophic ending is in sight, and they're doing nothing to stop it but post warnings?
