The US's response to 9/11 did in fact destroy most remnants of our liberal democracy: the Patriot Act, the birth of the surveillance state, Guantanamo, Abu Graib, the torture regime, the destruction of Iraq and Afghanistan. Especially trillions of dollars paid for/wasted by US tax payers - money that could have been spent rebuilding the middle class, rescuing communities that were decimated by US corporations offshoring jobs through NAFTA - an effort that could have ameliorated the rural-urban divide and much of the righteous anger Trump has cynically weaponized. College students seem to be the only cohort who still have a strong moral compass and see US supported genocide as intolerable. campus activism played an important role in ending the horrifically immoral Vietnam war and leading the Anti-Apartheid Divestment Movement that helped bring the racist South African regime to an end.
