Don't let anyone forget that trump is an unserious person who poses a serious threat because his followers pose a serious threat. They may represent only a third or less of the electorate but they adore him more than they love the USA, conservatism, the Republican party, their neighbors or any deity.
The first time Trump won I remember surprising friends and family with my consistent rants about how “the mainstream media” had done this to us. Folks thought I was overstating it. I disagreed. They normalized him as he campaigned then as president (I will never forgive/forget them tripping over themselves to call that maniac “presidential” whenever he used a complete sentence) and they normalize him now. If you read the NY Times you would have NO IDEA how unhinged the man is, how fascistic his policies and associates are, and most of all, thar he is one in a number of transnational criminals posing as politicians (as Sarah Kendzior often reminds us). These days I read (nay, skim!) said media and pretend I am a scholar in the future trying to find accurate reporting about this time—it’s just not there in the mainstream. This is a disgrace and has been since 2015 and it’s worse now. Sure, the end of media as we know it and Trump was/is a kind of perfect storm but real, ethical, independent journalists have weathered it, keep doing their work, at great cost. The corporate and legacy media have not. Their lack of courage and professional ethics in these times is so depressing and so deeply antidemocratic.
This hits the target directly, thanks, we need more of this coverage of the coverage. Media also steers away from any stories that examine why we ended up with Trump--events that trail on back to Reagan's era like Iran Contra.
Many years ago a very smart man named Neil Postman wrote a book about the US media called Amusing Ourselves to Death. Postman had some unusual notions, but about the media he was spot on. In 2016 the corporate media showed that it had no idea how to cover a norm-obliterating candidate like Trump, they couldn't contend with his avalanche of lies, but Trump was good for the bottom line. There's no excuse now. Trump's latest stunts cannot be normalized because they are so insane, yet the corporate media is doing just that, day after day. It's disgusting. The NYT is a major culprit. Paper of Record? Please.
I would really like someone to do some data analysis of how accurate polls have been over the last 20 yrs. I am now of the opinion that current polls are wrong wrong wrong. I don't think this election will be close, I think it'll be close to a landslide for Harris. The only unknown is electoral votes vs popular votes, as they live in different universes. Media lives according to polls, and they're fooling themselves with their CYA vision of how to cover candidates.
