Pardon a Substack n00b, but how do I sign up for the newsletter and notifications? I'm disappointed about missing the town hall.

This decision was disappointing but not surprising. I will keep fighting the fight to inform as many people as possible of the threat Christian Nationalists pose to our democracy. 45 is their tool. They pull his strings with fawning and flattery.

Disappointing but not surprising. Well said Andra!

Don't get discouraged and make sure to cast a vote for anyone other than the current crop of Republicans. Don't throw away your vote on a third party and remember, even if you don't agree or like everyone of their (Biden's/Democrats policies, especially towards Israel) it does not help the world overall to ensure that Trump regains the office along with his co-conspirators. Our institutions needs to be strengthened and in my opinion that can best be done by voting in Democrats to fix the unjust activities of the billionaire class owned Supreme Court and politicians who are doubling down on their priorities. The world climate disaster and the rolling back of environmental and medical laws/decisions need to be stopped ASAP.

Agreed.

Expand full comment

Sorry, Therese, but I think we need to move quickly to ranked choice voting and give the third party candidates a chance. Goodness knows neither major party is good for the US or the world.

Ranked choice, at a bare minimum, is so necessary.

Expand full comment

I would love ranked choice voting as the standard. Is that available across all fifty states this election cycle? If not I stand by voting for the least harmful choices this election cycle and until it is available. If ranked choice voting needs to be enabled across all fifty states, territories and district of Columbia I don't see the Republican states especially going for the change. Passing the john lewis voting rights act is also desperately needed

Yes, we need to guarantee voting rights!!

Ranked choice voting would be good, sure. I think it is not snap your fingers and done. Isn’t that a State choice at this time?

I’m so devastated by the votes of Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson. The others don’t even surprise me.

Empires that reach the end of their lifespan care little about 'The Law' as such... what matters more is overall Influence & Power, & how it can be jockeyed best. Like him or hate him, President Donald John Trump has sufficient of both... any attempt at denying him ballot access means Civil War v2.0... which also means US bases overseas being stormed en masse by militiamen & the servicemen in said installations being mowed down mercilessly by UAVs, Mortars, Artillery & Rockets... In other words 'A Mortal Blow'... the Supreme Court it appears... 'know the score' of where things stand.

It is always exasperating to see the Supreme Court play wag the dog and end up with absurdities. In this case, they gave Congress the newly bestowed right to decide who is on every state’s federal ballot. The rationale makes no sense when examined closely. So I suspect they haven’t thought this through and will end up feeling foolish when the law of unintended consequences hits them.

Expand full comment

It seems going back to when Senator Joe Biden, then chair of the Judiciary Committee, ridiculed Anita Hill who bravely testified to the unfitness of Clarence Thomas, the Supreme’s have been in a downward spiral with the Democrats oblivious to the long game being played out against law and democracy. So here we are. Even the supposed three liberal justices have drunk the Kool-Aid. Please convince me it’s not now game over.

It's never game over, but we are certainly in a dark place.

It will be game over if 45 becomes 47

It is "game over" if you decide to concede now, and don't work your ass off to get everyone you know to vote in November. It was always us who were going to be the first line and the last line of defense of our constitutional democratic republic. If you want to give up now, you can now file yourself under "Trump supporter" because that's the outcome you are choosing.

Bull. We don’t get to elect the Supreme Court Justices. And not working my ass off to get transitional genocide Joe re-elected doesn’t mean being a Trump supporter. Please don’t tell me who or what I am. I want and deserve a different choice. Both parties have fallen behind their candidates in opposition to any others.. I’m 68 and have been a Democrat my entire adult life. Whenever there was a candidate that could and would have made a real difference, the party elite took it away. Both parties have been bought and sold.

Another member of the Moron Left heard from. I got tired of fools like you 50 years ago.

Well then you have given up. Things are messy under Biden now, but in a Country that still is a Constitutional Democratic Republic, it is messy but it can be changed. You can work to elect people who represent you, but it does take effort. Look at elections and freedom of choice under Putin or Erdogen or Orban- that is your future under a Strongman like Trump.

Expand full comment

Well, another poster telling me what I espouse. I have worked to elect people who represent me and what I envision as a better union. God forbid we should collectively criticize the support of genocide. Unfortunately, many of those who have run to make a change in the US political status quo are outspent and never win a seat in our so called representative government. Comparing honest disdain for what is happening in our name with our tax dollars as support for Putin or Orban and that authoritarian ilk is most disappointing.

We probably agree on many things more than we disagree. I am not your enemy. I do agree with you that it is disappointing when a candidate I wanted doesn’t get elected. I keep in mind that I can still vote for the person I want, whether they win or not and that that privelege to vote could be lost. Where I have had good luck is in local elections. Have you also been disappointed in your local elections? While I think the Republican Party is a lost cause, I still support many Democrats.

I work to elect people locally by knocking doors, registering voters, working as a poll worker. Many of us phone Democratic and Independent voters in swing States to encourage them to vote for candidates who support our democratic notms and institutions.

It’s quite dangerous when a 2-Party State has one Party which fails, which is the case right now. Not sure how we get through it other than to stand up and stand out for candidates. Any more it can be dangerous to put a sign out in your yard.

My primary goal is to work to elect those who still believe in democratic principles and to make sure Trump and his kind never hold Office again.

I’m heartened to know I am not your enemy. And I applaud your dedication. I would like to know that you are open to criticism of a totally unjustified position our country has been placed in and our part in this ongoing atrocity unfolding. I support Ukraine resisting the unprovoked aggression by Putin. How can Biden continue that support against Russian aggression while supporting the aggression against Palestinian people. I have been a Democrat my entire adult life and I am not a cheerleader at this time. This position the administration has taken will have a negative effect down ballot to where your efforts go. One must look at the big picture. This is beyond local elections where I still vote Democratic.

Biden is being selfish just like late Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Dianne Feinstein and other Democrats of the past. The uncommitted votes of Michigan were not just against Biden but also against the Democratic party establishment to come up with better candidate to beat the Oath breaking insurrectionist. If the Democratic Party is actually concerned about not derailing democracy they would nominate Ms. Gretchen Whitmer and Mr. Gavin Newsom for the ticket ensuring Michigan and the Presidency.

Recently the speech calling for the Ceasefire in Gaza by Harris was nothing more than a political ploy as she completed the sentence after the applause indicating it not being permanent but a temporary one. I wonder if 30,000 innocent lives are not enough for them to stop this madness and stop providing Israel with the resources to continue this Genocide.
