I’m a new subscriber because of my respect for you and Mehdi - and because of this account of your successful treatment for acute myeloid leukemia. My husband died last October, 10 days after the same diagnosis. The experience was shocking for me and our son. I am very happy for you! Keep fighting and writing.
I`m as well a new subscriber here at Zeteo and to be honest didn`t know who you were. First of all I want to express that I`m very happy you were able to recover and go on living your life and everything that comes with that.
I agree with the sentiment that a second Trump presidency will be much more dangerous, not only for the US but for us here in Europe and of course the rest of the world. But looking from the outside and of course I could be wrong because i don`t have a full view on things, my feeling is that Joe Biden, his campaign and a big chunk of the democratic party and the democratic coalition is not putting their message out. Or at least in the way, i as someone who would be considered "far left" in the US, would want to see it adressed. At least that is what most of my friends in the US and the people I follow online are telling me.
I think Trump will be much more radical, fascistic and ruthless in his second term. He made that pretty clear. And that`s why I think it is so important, the Biden campaign and the President himself need to do much more to reach young voters, the more leftish voters and all of those who are not pleased with the way, he is and was running the country so far.
I guess my point and question as well is, why is Biden, the campaign and especially the democratic party not doing more outreach and is talking to these groups that are so important to win this immensely important election? So far the "get over yourselves/so you want Trump" approach we`ve seen from Pelosi, Clinton, many others in the democratic establishment and in the media isn`t going to win people over, right?
Yes, America has a lot to loose. But has the Choice we once had, already been played?
In describing President Biden, you said, "...he works with political adversaries as well as allies, to seek political consensus."
Does that justify the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people, using your tax dollars: to maim, kill and torture them with American munitions? Where is the "consent of the governed?" Americans of all religions and ethnicities, are outraged about this! Look out the window.
Its encouraging to read of a successful fight against cancer. It baffles me how so many liberals urge support to Biden without any mention of the Palestinian lives the so-called "consolar in chief" has helped eradicate. 35,000 gone. And Biden and most Democrats send more weapons to Israel for genocide.
John, I was so sorry to read about your terrifying diagnosis but thrilled to learn that
Your transplant was successful. My daughter had the same diagnosis when she was just 13 months old, and received an autologous bone marrow transplant just before her third birthday. She’s 38 now!!! We got our miracle. So happy to find you on Substack and of course I subscribed! By the way, I’m sure you don’t remember me but my desk was near yours at the St. Petersburg Times more than 40 years ago! I was the special sections editor and I think you were an intern. I went by MB Dooley then. Small world! Prayers for your continued good health …
I like the phrasing by Jay Rosen "Not the odds, but the stakes." Having said that, I met Rosen (maybe did a short interview with him, can't remember?) many years ago when I was a young, shy journalism student. He was extremely self-confident and had no patience with someone who was not. I'm sure he loved you, John Harwood, as you are a VIP, but just know he was an arrogant, dismissive jerk with little old me, who had no power--to the point I still remember it decades later. Those are his true colors.
I can only speak for myself as a progressive, but i`d say a lot of progressives would agree with the piece. In my opinion the problem isn`t that progressives, leftists aso do not see the danger, but they expect more from Joe Biden. I think a lot of them in the end will vote for him although they are currently saying they won`t. Which is the right thing to do at the moment in my opinion, to put pressure on him to change some his stances, policies aso
This is a smart take. I do appreciate that the leftists have pulled Biden along to stake out positions he would not have initially taken, like with student loans or perhaps even climate. I worry that SOME [certainly not all] leftists are rooting against Biden and think that Trump winning is some long term win for more progressive positions. I disagree with that.
Oh no, I don`t agree with that either. This is not how things work and I hope those who think that, can be convinced to change their mind. Although in my opinion there are not that many who actually think a second Trump term will bring the revolution. But we all know how slim the margins are going to be in some states, so..

Thank you for subscribing, Helen. Means a lot.
Glad you are part of tis endeavor! I loved seeing you on CNBC trying to keep Kernan from spewing his one-sided nonsense.
Your daughter is a superhero!

I believe the Democrats are woefully underestimating the ire of the electorate re: its unconditional support of Israel's genocide of Palestinians.
May you know health and wellness.

Nice piece John. Glad to hear your situation has improved. You have a hero for a daughter. Thanks for your work. I am a fan.

John, thank God you made it through the cancer. Your daughter is awesome. I just subscribed to the newsletter.
I am so happy you are doing well! 🙏🏽

Welcome back! We need you - and your voice in this critical time. Bravo!
Also John’s experience with cancer is inspiring.
Great read. I am really worried that progressives will roll their eyes at this kind of analysis but I hope they don’t sit our this election.

Very glad to hear that your treatment has been successful. I miss your sane voice on TV.
