Yeah, well is there a solution to the evil 'muricans who voted for Trump and are enabling Trump right now? ICE Barbie gets on a rampage with Democrat senators and doesn't back down one millimeter. The root problem is not solved at all.
Not yet- "Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent pro-Palestinian activist, who remains in a Louisiana detention facility without charges." 9 May 2025
This is illegal and illegitimate. Sec of State Rubio said, “I see one of these lunatics and I just snatch them off the street.” Think this is how YOU want YOUR country run??? I DO NOT!! Emphatically. That isn’t “policy” - that’s IDIOCY. And ILLEGAL in our democracy. Period. I’m aghast.
So it is great news about Rümeysa Öztürk's release! But it makes the continued detention of Mahmoud Kahlil even more puzzling. Those two cases seemed to share many similarities, the lack of identification during apprehensions, making them more like kidnapping, the defiance of court orders not to transport the victims out state jurisdiction. So can anyone explain why Mahmoud is still in the ICE detention center in Louisiana?
It's about time. Now the real work begins. Will she be allowed to remain in the U.S. to complete her studies? Will she even want to? This is probably going to be the most traumatizing event in her life. If I had an out, I would take it. But only after trying to stick it to Homeland Security in a court. Will this finally start setting precedents in the court systems around the country? I certainly hope so. We need to stop allowing these storm troopers to continue to violate peoples civil rights as given by the constitution.
The power of the courts to adhere to the constitution are dangerously at risk. If a woman can't be Muslim, her only "crime" be targeted by "walking while being Muslim", she is a victim of a hate crime and is the one at risk. It is obvious that she was kidnapped because she "wore"her faith on her body. Hate crime sanctioned by this country and used as a symbol to silence and spread hate and fear.
Would any woman in this country be kidnapped wearing a nun's habitat?
She was kidnapped for who she is, not for what she did. Homeland security is guilty of a henious hate crime and should be detained and tried in what we hope we have. A fair unpaid court of law. Not by a judge on Trump's payroll
Thank goodness. At least she can get the care she needs. Is the government going to still pursue her deportation? Can the issue be dealt with now in District Court rather than immigration court?
This is important because the issue for all the protestors who had visas cancelled and have been collected by ICE is a narrow but important one. The infamous Section C of 8 U.S.C. § 1182 already has a free speech exception. THAT can be overcome by the "personal opinion" of the Secretary of State that the alien's presence "would compromise a *compelling* United States foreign policy interest. Note that this is a "right now" interest, not the POTENTIALLY serious adverse foreign policy consequences" of the statute where free speech is not involved.
The problem is that in the few cases this has been invoked by a Secretary of State, the immigration courts have given "great deference" to that opinion. Presumably there has been some serious classified background in such cases. Here, the whole idea that Rubio doesn't have to DEFEND his opinion that somehow an op ed is an actual and compelling danger to US foreign policy needs to be examined, and law made, particularly since he has actually made public his purile "reason" and there is no evidence to support his opinion.
Meanwhile Barnard has suspended student JOURNALISTS for simply covering a protest. Apparently just being in the vicinity of a Pro Palestinian person is antisemitic.
Thank God there are people in the judicial system fighting back against these zionistic extrajudicial actions that risk destroying the rule of law in America.
This is about life or death for American liberty. More Americans need to wake up and raise hell over it before it's too late.
Such a relief for Rumeysa Ozturk but this is a foreboding of things to come from this fascist regime which seeks to squelch freedoms of speech, press, and right to gather and peacefully protest There are rumblings afoot that suggest that this is only the beginning of 4 long years
And the country is undergoing economic contraction as well as foreigners will stop buying our debt leaving us with the largest debt bubble in history being popped by a radical tariff pin This explosion will not end well
WARNING get out of credit and into gold or silver to preserve any wealth one may have
In a statement, the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing Ms Ozturk, said they were "delighted" by her release.
"Rümeysa can now return to her beloved Tufts community, resume her studies, and begin teaching again," said Noor Zafar, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU. "Today's ruling underscores a vital First Amendment principle: No one should be imprisoned by the government for expressing their beliefs." BBC report 9 May 2025
Everyone who has been denied due process should have their cases dismissed and be allowed to stay. That's the only way to send a message to the regime that their actions will not only be ineffective, but backfire on them completely.
Somebody (Dems/judges) should also make it clear to individual ICE agents that, once this regime is out of power, "I was just following orders" is not going to protect them from prosecution.
Fantastic. I hope she sues for unlawful detention. She already has good lawyers, and she’s entitled to damages.

Hurray!! But what about the Columbia student whose wife just had a baby?!😃♥️🥺♥️🇺🇸🇺🇸
This release seems to be setting a precedent. We should be steadfast in taking action and be confident in the house of cards that is Trump policy
🙏🏻🇺🇸
Good news for Due Process!🫶💪💪💪💪 we must keep fighting for the release of the others!

What a travesty.🥺

The government should compensate her for all the days she was wrongfully detained
And for her medical expenses!
Thank God she was rescued, that poor woman suffering like that. It's unspeakable what is going on in this country 🥺😢💔

That would put half of my neighbors and coworkers at risk! Another version of Driving While Black?🤢🤮😡

has she been released or just ordered to be released? crossing my fingers there is still some lawful behaviour there!!

i just saw she is actually out!! may this be the beginning of a trend.
