💯 Mehdi. The first thing I read upon waking up this morning was that Walz was Kamala’s choice. Big sigh of relief. Shapiro would have been the worst choice.

Yes, I sighed a sigh of relief too. Let's win this.

I'm a LOCAL Democratic activist, retired professor of education (Rutgers), married to my wife, and hail from rural Appalachia (a town of 600 people--no stop light). I'm DELIRIOUS with JOY that VP Harris picked Governor Walz. He's a working class kid that has taken EVERY opportunity that came his way and did VERY well. So, he's a retired Command Master Sargent, which is a huge deal. He speaks Mandarin. The year he coached his HS football team to a state championship (1999), he also advised the school's Gay-Straight Alliance, when teachers could be FIRED for doing such a think. He holds a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Mankato State, a great regional university, especially for education.

What does an educator bring? He can TEACH the policy initiatives to the American public in every day language. It's why he's so deadly funny with the press (and his "weird" barb is so spot on!). He shows what working class kids CAN achieve if given the chances we deserve. Anyway, I'm thrilled and will work like a dog that not only do these candidates win, but every single Dem down ballot from them.

Thanks for that rousing background on Walz. Mandarin? That will come in handy as VP! Pretty cool when the Chinese visit the White House. They will be honored have mad respect for an American who can speak Mandarin.

Right on! I knew we had a deep bench but I didn’t even know about this guy until a few weeks ago. . . The Dems are finally acting like a majority party!

My feeling on the choice of Walz over Shapiro is pretty much in line with Mehdi's--Shapiro was more the darling of Washington insiders, but Walz was more preferred by the rank-and-file. More points for Kamala for choosing in favor of the people, not the money. I also think Walz would make a great president of the Senate, since he has experience teaching adolescents. He strikes me as a mash-up of Eisenhower and Truman, with a bit of Henry Wallace stirred in.

Love the line about the Senate and adolescents. He’s gonna suffer zero fools in that chamber!

Shapiro was an absolute deal breaker for me as he was the younger Liberman who perhaps was the worse VP choice in my life time, in par with Cheney.

Expand full comment

Right? Liberman? WTF? Shapiro would have been a terrible liability no matter how much more money that would have brought in! We needed to stop selling democracy!

"against the odds" there is no way the odds are against Harris/Walz...with women's health and the health of the planet on the ballot, we will overwhelm the weird!

What a relief to wake up to this news!

And I suppose the Zionist/AIPAC folks are going to hate Mrs. Harris for her choice

It lets them know she doesn’t, in fact, work for them or their government. Baby step but significant step!

I understand feeling that way. After all money talks (AIPAC) But I've got to say I'm feeling sooo hopeful!

Try and be a bit more positive dude.

Seems that Minnesota produces good people for politics. Gov Walz has been a truly solid governor. His life experience of being a Command Seargeant Major, A teacher, a coach, a principle a legislator and a governor will prove more than adequate. Now let’s unify behind the ticket and end trumpism.

Great piece, Thank You! The contrast is very clear.

Still, I am an Uncommitted Voter in WA state.. At least 700,000 of us are watching...and waiting.

I was happy to read here what Walz has said! I chose to be Uncommitted because I believe in Democracy. This is how you tell elected officials where you stand. We did it with enough time for them to reconsider their actions. The Biden-Harris Administration's intention of massive genocide is on their watch.. A holocaust is underway as I write this.

I will Vote and help others Vote. We need the Senate and the House to pass long lagging legislation and to wrangle the Supreme Court. With Walz as President of the Senate, we can do that, great pick. Walz will lasso 'em.

I am still Uncommitted on the President-VP until,

"Justice flows down like water; and righteousness like a mighty stream."

It’s from the Christian Bible. It is etched into the Civil Rights memorial sculpture in the American south.

Sorry for misspelling your name in my first post to you, Marian. I checked out the clip, and started reading the Book of Amos. Not as well known as Daniel, Jeremiah and Isaiah , but I digress.

It's from the Bible. Amos 5:24. Martin Luther King famously quoted it here - 20 second clip

My Governor (yes, I am from Minnesota and live in the very town Governor Walz taught and lived in) will bring an energy unlike anybody has ever seen! What's amazing to watch from him is how he can win people over. He's just one of those kind of people you like being around. This is a great move by VP Harris!
