“Not only are they [the Trump administration] reshaping the media landscape in the US in their image – they’re now boasting of taking down a foreign news broadcasters’ leadership. A broadcast, of course, with global reach,” Owen says to Mehdi.

In this episode of ‘Two Outspoken,’ Mehdi and Owen meet in London to explain why the BBC is only helping Trump by “rolling over” and having their executives resign over the scandal. They also debunk claims of the BBC’s leftist and pro-Palestine bias – revealing that it’s actually the other way around.

The two dive deep into the Labour government’s dishonest portrayal of the Maccabi fan ban in Birmingham – which police have now confirmed was put in place due to “significant levels of hooliganism” from the fan base, rather than antisemitic threats from inside the UK.

“Keir Starmer and Lisa Nandy, the British government, as well as the British media, decided to throw Birmingham under a bus…to protect racist football hooligans from a state committing genocide,” Owen says to Mehdi.

But the rally wasn’t just about immigration, because Robinson also used it to honor US right-wing activist Charlie Kirk and Elon Musk joined via video link. Despite most Brits being unfamiliar with Kirk before his assassination, Mehdi asks one major question: Are British politics, especially British conservative politics, becoming Americanized? MAGA-fied?

Owen notes, “One of the quite sinister things I heard being yelled at that rally was ‘God is king,’ which is this term which is being used by the US far right… it’s got nothing to do with British culture. That phrase has just been imported, and it’s associated with the likes of Charlie Kirk.”

The two also break down the glaring double standard between the policing of far-right and pro-Palestine protesters in the UK, after 890 people were arrested the week prior at a Palestine Action protest. Mehdi asks, “24 people arrested at a violent rally. 890 people arrested at a nonviolent rally. How do we explain that disconnect?”

Despite a horrific attack by Israeli forces on a Gaza cafe frequented by journalists, activists, and local residents that killed at least 30 and injured dozens more, the story making front page news in UK media this week is one condemning a British punk-rap duo over their calls for a free Palestine and “death to the IDF.”

“The BBC devoted more stories and more words to Glastonbury and ‘death to the IDF’ than they did to the actual deaths of Palestinian people on Monday in Gaza,” Mehdi says in the latest episode of Two Outspoken, “which I think is unforgivable, inexcusable, racist, and the BBC has failed time and again.”

Meanwhile, the direct action movement Palestine Action is facing a banning order that would proscribe the group as a terrorist organization, which could result in members or supporters being charged with a criminal offence that carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

“In a functioning democracy, you'd expect journalists to start asking some pretty searching questions about proscribing a movement which, by standard definition, obviously isn't terrorism,” Owen says.

Mehdi and Owen also discuss Zeteo’s new documentary Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, which is available now, and the hypocrisy around the BBC’s decision to shelve it due to concerns of partiality.

“That's the Orwellian world we live in now,” Mehdi says.

Legendary British former football (soccer for Americans) star and sports broadcaster Gary Lineker – who Mehdi interviewed last year – confirmed he would be leaving the BBC, after months of coming under fire for speaking out on Gaza. Hard-right political party Reform UK made major gains in local elections and even won a fifth MP seat, beating out the Labour Party. And Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to cut immigration in the UK, invoking lazy anti-migrant rhetoric in the process. Mehdi and Owen discuss it all.

“Let's be clear, nobody actually thinks there is an antisemitic particle in Gary Lineker. This is all just manufactured,” Owen says to Mehdi. “Ever since, of course, Israel's genocide began, there's been a deliberate attempt to turn the world upside down and the people who've been made to lose their jobs, to be silenced, to be de-platformed, to be arrested, to be facing deportation, are the people who oppose genocide.”

Mehdi brings up how YouTube star and children’s educator Ms. Rachel – who Mehdi interviewed earlier this month – has also been receiving ridiculous and unfair accusations of antisemitism, due to her advocacy for children in Gaza. As Owen and Mehdi agree, Lineker and Ms. Rachel have been targeted by apologists for Israel because they have such big platforms, and reach so many “normies outside of often political circles.”

On the topic of Keir Starmer and his anti-migrant rhetoric, Owen talks about how the prime minister’s recent shift is “even worse” than previous Labour leaders’ pivots to the right, which is emboldening Reform even more.

The pair go on to discuss Britain’s version of Donald Trump, how authoritarians try and neuter mainstream media organizations, and why speaking up against the genocide in Gaza is not just helping Palestinians, but everybody. “I genuinely believe this depravity being normalized would be a precursor for much worse. So that's why we have to speak at this time,” says Owen, adding: “The journalists who stayed silent [on Gaza] should never be forgiven.”

Since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk weaponized the social platform in ways that make the truth debatable, facts irrelevant, and honesty a mirage. The tech billionaire’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he leads, was recently granted access to a federal system responsible for $6 trillion in annual payments, and with it, the private information of millions of Americans.

“It is a complete coup because these people [DOGE] are not elected. They now have control of data. They have control of money… He's [Musk] just sitting on Twitter, just unilaterally chatting to his rightwing fans going ‘What should I cancel next? What should I stop payments to?’ Sorry, Who the f*ck are you?” Mehdi asks (to which Musk would likely answer with “I’m dark MAGA,” but that’s just our guess!)

The two also discuss “Trumpism” and its different mutations across Europe, where Owen argues that “what Trumpism offers is a coherent vision, whether we like it or not.”

“People concluded democracy doesn't deliver the goods… and unless you have something else which explains, no, don't blame the fact that you've got freedom and you're able to decide who rules over you, blame the fact you've got a system which is very good for those who make money but actually is rigged against your interests… then you get the way for a right wing authoritarian takeover. And that is what is happening,” Owen explains.

“Yes, Israel may benefit from the fall of Assad,” Mehdi argues, “And yes, the United States did want Assad to fall and spent millions of dollars. But so did Syrian people. And we shouldn’t strip them of their agency and their desires.”

Owen adds, “It is important that we, on the Left, keep our house in order, and we have a universal, emancipatory project which is about freeing people from all forms of oppression, violence, wherever that comes from. You know, the United States of America, they pick and choose. It’s what they did with Saddam Hussein for a long time … It’s Orwellian.”

The two also unpack the double standards when it comes to Syria and Palestine. “On the pro-Palestine side, you have some people who are pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel … But then when it comes to Syria, they're pro-Assad, which I find inconsistent morally and politically,” Mehdi says, pointing out that Western powers do the reverse — backing an al-Qaeda offshoot in Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), while obsessing over Hamas in Gaza.

As Syria begins to rebuild after Assad, Owen emphasizes the importance of anti-imperialism: “We need an anti imperialism, which is also about consistent liberation and not dictatorship, because the point with Assad is he used that rhetoric for legitimacy rather than actually practical help for the Palestinians.”

In the latest episode of ‘Two Outspoken,’ filmed in Washington DC, Mehdi and Owen sit down together and find plenty to both agree and disagree about, from the role of the economy in the Dems’ landslide defeat, to the impact of misinformation and media bias. The normalization of these tragedies raises serious questions about the value placed on Arab lives. Drawing parallels to past conflicts, they shed light on the systematic indifference shown by governments and media alike, as the specter of genocide looms large. Will Israel repeat in Lebanon what it has done in Gaza?

“We have opened the gates of Hell well beyond Gaza,” says Mehdi. “We've basically said anywhere around the world, you can do this, you can get away with it.”

They also cover the latest controversies swirling around Labour Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer – including the fact that, according to at least one poll, he’s already less popular than his Tory predecessor Rishi Sunak. “The problem is there's no vision hanging it together,” Owen says. “They were handed power because the Tories destroyed themselves.”

Palestinian life in ratios…

With 274 Palestinians killed so as to save four Israelis, Mehdi points to the ugly truth of how Israel’s government and its allies hailed Saturday's operation a success, despite the grotesque ratio of almost 70 Palestinians killed for every Israeli rescued. 

On terminology, Owen makes it clear that Saturday’s operation should be referred to as a massacre “if you value Palestinian human life at all.” He uses examples within and outside Israel, including an official government tweet that was deleted too late, to show the extent of Palestinian dehumanization and incitement to genocide.

Trump-level gaslighting…

Between the US gaslighting that Israel accepted a deal with Hamas, and Israeli denying it, the prospect of a ceasefire is in a state of complete confusion. “Do they think we just don't have eyes? Ears? An internet connection?,” a frustrated Mehdi asks Owen.

Mehdi and Owen also argue that delaying a deal is probably a cynical ploy by Netanyahu to get Joe Biden out of the Oval Office, and Donald Trump back in, come November’s U.S. presidential election.

Mehdi brings up UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s not-so-hopeful start to the campaign, when he got soaked in rain while announcing the early election date. This election comes as Sunak’s Conservative Party has become widely unpopular, after going through three different prime ministers in the space of one parliament with no election. 

“The Conservatives have just destroyed themselves more comprehensively than any government ever in British democratic history,” Owen told Mehdi. 

As polls predict a huge defeat for Sunak and the Conservatives in the general election, Mehdi and Owen discuss the current state of the Labour Party, including the party’s recent decision to suspend the campaign of left-wing candidate Faiza Shaheen. Her wrong doing? Liking a tweet about a Jon Stewart sketch. 

“It's an old clip and a tweet describing what's happening in the clip, and the intensity with which pro-Israel figures, the pro-Israel lobby, people in the media, go crazy if you dare to criticize Israel or say things that people don't want to hear. And that gets her suspended,” Mehdi said to Owen.

“What makes their [the Labour Party] heart beat a little bit faster is crushing left-wing opponents. And the fact she's spoken out on Gaza is definitely something which has made them want to get rid of her,” Owen added.

On the topic of Gaza, Mehdi called out the U.S. State Department for refusing to call Israel’s invasion of Rafah a full ground invasion, comparing John Kirby to Comical Ali. Mehdi and Owen also discussed Nigel Farage’s Islamophobic comments on Sky News last weekend, as well as the irony of Farage being interviewed by a host with his own history of Islamophobia.

As you can see in the video above, they discussed how the ICC’s prosecution team is also seeking warrants for Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as two other Hamas leaders — Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, and Ismail Haniyeh. They also covered what a shock it is for the Israeli political class to find itself held to account by international legal institutions; and whether this move will change anything on the ground for Palestinians.

“They asked me whether I framed, the Israeli actions in Gaza as a genocide. I laconically said yes. And then, they asked me about what do I think about the slogan ‘Palestine should be free, from the river to the sea,’ and I answered that I think anybody who lives between the river and the sea, anywhere in the world, should be free.” Pappé told Mehdi and Owen.
