“I wanted the comment on the budget. It was my constitutional right,” Erakat tells Mehdi, “I was told I need to leave the room. I was never told I was arrested before I was rough-handled by two officers who placed handcuffs on me, on purpose, very tight, who began to rough-handle me, to spread my legs to search me, and to explain that this is what happens when you don’t listen.”

Erakat was charged with trespass and obstruction after the mayor prohibited discussion of Israeli bonds during the hearing. Joining Erakat on the show is Lydia Ghuman, executive director of the Internationalist Law Center, who organized the effort to protest the county’s investments in Israeli bonds.

“No other foreign country can get investment of local taxpayer dollars, but Israel can,” she says. “Florida is in many ways an experiment, a lab for Zionist influence, and uses Florida as a test case to see what policies, what they can push, due to the relationships they’ve been able to form with local politicians.”

Twenty-five years after two commercial planes brought New York’s 110-story Twin Towers crashing down, two mothers who lost their adult children in the attack join Mehdi to reflect on their loss, their children’s legacies, and their fight against hate after the attack.

“I remember the 29-year-old woman who was going to change our lives,” says Donna Marsh O’Connor, who lost her pregnant daughter, Vanessa Lang Langer, who worked in the World Trade Center’s South Tower. “We still live in a culture that took my daughter, made a mess of the country she left behind, and every single day I want people to know that Vanessa would not recognize this country.”

As the dust settled on ground zero after the terrorist attack, grief turned to anger and distrust. For Talat Hamdani, mother of 23-year-old EMT and NYPD cadet Mohammad Salman Hamdani, that meant dealing with smears and suspicion against her son because of his Muslim faith.

“There was an article in the New York Post which said, with his picture, ‘missing or hiding’... trying to paint a picture of him being as a terrorist.” Hamdani tells Mehdi, “He went down there to help and made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Hamdani has fought to have her son recognized as a first responder at the 9/11 memorial in New York City, a request she says has been repeatedly denied, even by the current mayor. Zeteo reached out to the office of Zohran Mamdani on the matter, but has not heard back.

These progressive House candidates all won their Democratic primaries, but they also have something else in common – they were all endorsed by Justice Democrats.

With the midterm elections less than three months away, Justice Democrats’ communications director Usamah Andrabi joins Mehdi to break down what has, so far, been a big year for progressives, and what these victories mean for the future of the left and the Democratic Party.

“The Democratic base is excited by our candidates because they are showing you don’t have to be bought and sold to be leaders for your communities,” Andrabi says. “In fact, you can’t be leaders for your community unless you are unbought and unbossed.”

And as AIPAC continues to pour millions of dollars against pro-Palestinian candidates, the two discuss just how big of a role Gaza has played in the Democratic primaries.

“Overwhelmingly, Democratic voters don’t want to see their taxpayer dollars spent on endless wars and genocide abroad, and yet, only a minority of Democrats in Congress represent that view,” Andrabi tells Mehdi.
