By Sandra Mitchell
Sandra Mitchell and Dean Reader published A Pictorial History of the British Hearse in 2008 (mostly compiled by Dean), the first book on British hearses. Only 250 copies of that book were printed, so they are happy that here in the Auto Review series we are able to augment their original work with colour illustrations and some new material. Here we cover the history and the line of development of the British hearse. Many automotive enthusiasts find hearses fascinating; their build quality harks back to an earlier era of coachbuilding. If you need to know some of the stories of some of the coachbuilders whose workmanship features in these pages, see Auto Review 55: Fine Bodies. That book also describes many of the limousines and following cars employed by funeral directors, which are not covered in this volume.
